A look back at CYBERISLE 2023

2023's CYBERISLE Conference was held on October 4, and we would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to all those who took part and attended. None of this could have been possible without our platinum sponsor, Riela Cyber, and gold sponsor, Deloitte, as well as all the other organisations that presented and attended at the trade stands.

We would also like to thank the volunteers from University College Isle of Man (UCM), who assisted in making sure our attendees were all checked in, and the Comis Hotel for keeping us all fed.The day started with an opening address by the Minister for Justice and Home Affairs, Hon. Jane Poole-Wilson, in her first attendance at a CYBERISLE conference. The minister launched our new branding, the Cyber Security Centre for the Isle of Man (CSC), and was followed by a quick but informative presentation by the NCSC on the latest threats. After which Martin Smith, MBE, professed his love for Apollo 13 (the film), while reminding us that cyber security is about people and that a team effort from the boardroom to the technicalities is required to defend against cyber threats.

A coffee break followed, allowing delegates to mingle and network, sharing stories and visiting trade stands where cybersecurity was at the forefront of conversation. After which, the Deloitte Discovery Room held its first session on cyber fraud, with Riela hosting a Red vs. Blue team demonstration in their main hall. The rest of the day continued with engaging presentations from Dave Cartwright, Dr. Francis Gaffney, and Nick Downing, to name but a few. These were supplemented by panel discussions that provided delegates with a chance to have their questions answered by experts in the field

So what were the key takeaways?

Cybercriminals are primarily opportunistic; if your digital house is secure and your software is up-to-date it is likely that they will move on to an easier target.

Ransomware is still the biggest cyber threat. RaaS continues to be an issue while rogue states turn a blind eye to criminal gangs.

Cybersecurity is an issue for everyone, and those in IT, compliance, and risk need to help the boardroom appreciate the risks.

Your staff can be your best defence; training them appropriately and encouraging cyber education is an effective tool in fighting cybercrime.

The feedback we have received so far has been extremely positive and we look forward to building on this for CYBERISLE 2024, we hope you will join us then.
